Categories used as keywords

How many categories should a Google Business Profile have?

Google says to use as few categories as possible, just the fewest it takes to describe your overall core business.

The rule: what Google says

Google's guidelines say to choose "the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business." Its categories section says to use as few categories as possible from the provided list. Categories should be as specific as possible, but representative of your main business. Google says not to use categories solely as keywords. The goal is to describe the business holistically, not to list its services, products or amenities. Google may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don't follow its guidelines, and an owner who believes a profile should be reinstated can appeal.

How to tell if it applies to your profile

Google says the categories you select should describe what the business is, not what it has. Do not use categories that belong to other nearby or related businesses. Examples are a business physically contained within yours, or an entity that contains yours. Google also says that if you choose a specific category, you can skip any category that seems redundant with it.

What to fix before you appeal

Google tells owners to make sure the profile follows all the guidelines before submitting an appeal. It says to focus on adding the most specific categories for your business. If you can't find a category for your business, choose a more general one. Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business when appealing. Appeals can only be submitted once.
